- River Clean Up Day
Gay Jones reported that about 40 people signed up at the Gristmill site for the Great American River Clean Up this month. Three kayak groups used Gristmill as a put-in. A camp on “deer island” may have been located. Stan Mofjeld noted that a large pile of garbage was left at the east end of the Gristmill bar, possibly by a Clean Up group. - Newsletter
Jim Morgan stated that he needs the articles for the Newsletter in a couple of weeks. - Picnic
Lori Christensen reported that Andrea with the Cordova Recreation and Park District stated that the District will provide a bounce house and face painting booth for the upcoming BRECA picnic. Gay Jones reported that a fire engine will also come by. - Mayhew Levee Project
Jim Morgan reviewed the existing situation with the Mayhew-Gristmill levee project. The remaining problems are that the east (upstream) end has a gap between the end of the levee and high ground, and the Kansas Access staging area has not been restored to pre-project conditions. In response to a BRECA letter, Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency (SAFCA) staff indicated that they intend to restore the Kansas Access staging area using the Corps of Engineers plan, and then are finished with the project. This is clearly not acceptable.
Jim Morgan stated that he had circulated another draft BRECA letter, but there had been concerns raised about the letter. The intent is to go from the staff level up to the political level to get the problems resolved. After some discussion, it was decided to send the letter to committee for further work.
- River Clean Up Day
- New Business
- Issues from the Floor
Joe O’Connor reported on the recent meeting of the American River Parkway Coalition. There was discussion about use of volunteers. Joe stated that one cannot rely on volunteers, and also this lets the Board of Supervisors out of their responsibilities for funding the Parkway.
- Issues from the Floor
- Meeting adjourned.
The next Steering Committee meeting will be held on October 26, 2010 at the Rancho Cordova Library.
